Nondestructive Evaluation of Coatings

چکیده
Bulk and Rayleigh (or surface wave) velocities of ultrasonic waves in chromium coatings on steel were measured and an experimental correlation was found between the surface velocity and the hardness. Since qualitative coating evaluation is commonly made using hardnesses as a guideline, the possibility is herewith presented of using the so und velocities of surface ultrasonic waves for this purpose. This provides the advantage of using a nondestructive technique over one that is destructive and more qualitative.

Electronic Speckle Pattern Shearing Interferometry for Nondestructive Testing of Thermal Sprayed Alloy Coatings
Thermal sprayed coatings have wide engineering applications. There now exists a wide range of destructive and nondestructive testing (NDT) methods for surface coating inspections. This paper describes an application of Electronic Speckle Pattern Shearing Interferometry (ESPSI) for NDT of thermal sprayed surface coatings. In contrast to other conventional methods such as eddy current, ultrasonic...
متن کاملNondestructive Evaluation of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites Using Reflective Terahertz Imaging
Terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) imaging is considered a nondestructive evaluation method for composite materials used for examining various defects of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites and fire-retardant coatings in the reflective imaging modality. We demonstrate that hidden defects simulated by Teflon artificial inserts are imaged clearly in the perpendicular pol...
متن کاملA fuzzy approach to the evaluation of human factors in ultrasonic nondestructive examinations
Human factors are among the main elements affecting the reliability of nondestructive examinations (NDE). In a man-machine system, human reliability is affected by many factors (performance shaping factors) whose influence on reliability cannot be easily expressed quantitatively. This paper identifies and ranks 59 perform-ance shaping factors by using a fuzzy reasoning method and proposes a pro...
متن کاملEvaluation of Heterogeneity of Paint Coating on Metal Substrate Using Laser Infrared Thermography and Eddy Current
Abstract—Non contact evaluation of the thickness of paint coatings can be attempted by different destructive and nondestructive methods such as cross-section microscopy, gravimetric mass measurement, magnetic gauges, Eddy current, ultrasound or terahertz. Infrared thermography is a nondestructive and non-invasive method that can be envisaged as a useful tool to measure the surface thickness var...
متن کاملPositive and Nondestructive Identification of Acrylic-Based Coatings Using Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis with the Agilent 4300 Handheld FTIR Authors
Acrylic-based coatings are produced in formulations to suit all the major markets within the coatings industry. Industrial, decorative, printing inks, powder, and wall coverings are some of the market areas where acrylic-based coatings are widely used. Water emulsion and film-forming acrylic-based coatings are of particular importance due to their relative high performance and extremely low vol...
